About the Program
Expressive Arts Therapy (EXA) is an integrative/intermodal, multi-modality arts approach that is used with people of all ages and backgrounds. We offer a dynamic, comprehensive, hands-on approach that prepares clinicians to integrate Expressive Arts Therapy into various practice settings.
Program Breakdown:
- Approximately 100 hours of class time and mentoring
- Approximately 50 hours of home practice & online participation
- Individual Creative Practice (documentation of 50 hours are required for the REAT)
- 200 hours practicum with (documentation requirement for REAT, possibility of your worksite being eligible)

About the Program (Series Curriculum):
Module One: Foundational Theories & Practices
Building on the introductory “taster” workshop, this 8-week class for a total of 24 class hours class offers participants a deeper exploration of the theories and practices of NarrARTive Expressive Arts Coaching, including a focus on narrative assessment practices, externalization, re-authoring, thickening, and performing of alternative, preferred narratives through expressive arts & arts-based witnessing practices. Participants will commit to a minimum of one biweekly practice session with a fellow student outside of class, completing a practice assessment for each session. (Completion is a pre-requisite for Level Two)
Module Two: Collective NarrARTive Practices
In this highly experiential 9-hour, 3-part class, participants will be introduced to collective narrative expressive arts practices. We will explore their application in working with groups and communities. (Completion is a pre-requisite for Level Three)
Module Three: Practicum
Training for the NarrARTive Expressive Arts Coaching Certificate Program culminates in co-facilitating with peers a pro bono Collective Arts Practice workshop for staff of a community service organization, either in-person or via Zoom under the supervision of the program trainers. Prior to the pro bono workshop, trainees will participate in a 9-hour, 3-part curriculum development, design & collaborative assessment class.
